cops bust illegal cross-border money exchange network, 2 held
BETTIAH, May 22 -- A joint team of special task force (STF) of Patna and Raxaul police arrested two individuals and seized Indian and Nepali currency from a place on Indo-Nepal border for their alleged involvement in illegal cross-border exchange network, police said on Thursday.
East Champaran police said acting on specific inputs, the team raided a sugar shop located in Sabji Bazaar area of Raxaul and arrested Md Saheb, a resident of Sirisiya Mal village under Nakardei police station and Ratan Kumar, a resident of Parauwa village.
Upon search, officials recovered Nepali currency to the tune of Rs.17.87 lakh and Indian currency worth Rs.13.04 lakh which is suspected to be part of an illegal cross-border exchange network.
"In the course of interrogation, it came to the light that the arrested were involved in unauthorised trading and circulation of Nepali and Indian currencies across the porous border. They would charge a hefty commission in exchange with Nepali currency," said Ravi Kumar, addition station house officer (ASHO), Raxaul police station.
"Further investigation to ascertain the source money, as well as to identify other members of the network is currently underway," said a police officer.
