PATNA, Sept. 29 -- The cadres-supporters of CPI and students of Bihar University of Health Sciences (BUHS) separately on Monday took out marches towards Lok Bhawan with different demands and breached barricades put up by police to maintain law and order. It resulted in a clash between the police and the students. Police used water canons and batons to disperse the protesters. Rural SP Komal Meena was allegedly hit by a stone but she escaped unhurt. The CPI was demanding the resination of chief election commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar after the recent media report alleging dissent over many of ECI decisions about the special intensive revision (SIR) of voter rolls and also the repeal of the Waqf Amendment Act. While the BUHS staged a protest over alleged delays in academic sessions and financial irregularities in the functioning of the institution. Overall, as many as 12 organisations of the CPI, including All India Students' Federation (AISF), All India Youth Federation (AIYF), Bihar Mahila Samaj, Bihar State Kisan Sabha, Bharatiya Khet Mazdoor Union, All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) and Tanzim-e-Insaf took out the march from Gandhi Maidan to Lok Bhawan. The CPI protesters also demanded reinstatement of the MGNREGA with 200 days of guaranteed work and minimum wages, enactment of a comprehensive central law for agricultural labourers, passage of a Shahid-e-Azam Bhagat Singh National Employment Guarantee Act, withdrawal of the four labour codes, and a halt to public sector privatisation, besides many other people-oriented issues. The protesters later submitted a memorandum, listing their demands, to Governor Syed Ata Hasnain, according to a statement issued by the Communist Party of India (CPI). Later, some protesters moved towards CM residence and attempted to gherao the CM house, leading to clashes with the police. The protesters broke the barbed wire fencing at JP roundabout and Dak Bungalow and tried to move ahead. The BUHS protesters showed slippers to the police and allegedly pelted stones on the police during the protest towards the personnel. Enraged over this, the police used water cannons and used baton charges to push them back. As many as four students received injuries on their head, hands and other parts of the body, said some of the protesters. No police personnel was injured, said the police officers. Police claimed some anti-social elements were among the protesters and indulged in stone-pelting, leaving a few people injured. Several protesters were also taken away from the protest site in a police vehicle, officials said. CPI state general secretary, Ramnaresh Pandey said that their agitation sought declaration of floods and droughts a national disaster, the anti-popular policies of the double-engine NDA government, sacking the CEC, distribution of millions of acres of land to capitalists under the guise of land acquisition and the injustices being inflicted on women and young girls. He told that if 14 districts in Bihar are suffering from the flood tragedy, other districts are under the grip of the drought and thus Bihar is simultaneously facing the tragedy of both floods and droughts. Meanwhile, Congress workers also protested at Kadam Kuan and burnt effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Kumar near Dinkar Golambar in Patna....
