Char Dham Yatra disrupted amid heavy rainfall; orange alert issued
Mussoorie/Haridwar, Aug. 22 -- The Char Dham Yatra was disrupted on Thursday after overnight rainfall triggered multiple landslides across the state, leaving 155 roads blocked.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for four districts, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall on Friday and Saturday.
In Chamoli, the Badrinath National Highway was blocked at Kamera, Bhanerpani, and Pagal Nala after heavy rains caused boulder falls and landslides around 6.30 am.
The National Highways Authority personnel cleared the blockages after more than three hours of effort, allowing stranded pilgrims to resume their journey.
In Uttarkashi, the Gangotri highway, already damaged at multiple spots since the August 5 Dharali disaster, was blocked near Dharasu and Songad. Similarly, the Yamunotri highway faced disruptions near Kuthnaur and Naradchatti.
These stretches were reopened after several hours, though authorities advised commuters to proceed with caution.
District Disaster Management Officer Shardul Gusain said, "Authorities are working swiftly. A section of the Gangotri highway near Dharasu has reopened, while work on Yamunotri's blocked stretches at Kuthnaur and Naradchatti was completed after two hours of effort."
The met department on Thursday issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in Bageshwar and Champawat on Friday, warning of extremely intense spells at isolated spots.
"On Wednesday evening, an additional 1,000 cusecs of water were discharged from Tehri reservoir. Since then, the Ganga's water level is being monitored. Teams from the district disaster management, irrigation, revenue, and police departments are on alert mode, while flood relief posts have been activated," Haridwar district magistrate Mayur Dixit said....
