Buxar MP detained in Nawada over land acquisition protest
PATNA/NAWADA, Oct. 27 -- Buxar MP Sudhakar Singh and several farmer leaders were detained in Nawada on Monday while they were going to participate in a dharna against the acquisition of land in Madhuban area for creation of a pond.
According to a press statement issued by the Joint Kisan Morcha (JKM), farmers of Madhuban area have been protesting land acquisition process, claiming that the district authorities invoked wrong provisions of the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013 to deprive landowners of their rights.
On Monday, hundreds of farmers riding tractors were heading to the ITI ground in Nawada under the banner of the JKM, to demand adequate compensation for paddy crops allegedly destroyed in Motnaje-Madhuban and action against officials responsible for the damage.
Near Mufassil police station, the SDO, backed by a strong police force, stopped dozens of tractors and used force to prevent the convoy from proceeding. Buxar MP Sudhakar Singh, former MLA Mohammad Kamran and farmer leaders including Dinesh Kumar and Ashok Prasad Singh then led a protest march on foot towards the dharna site, raising slogans against the district administration. The procession was halted again before it could reach the ITI ground.
The leaders, including Kapil Dev Prasad and Pawan Kumar, sat on a road dharna on the road, declaring that the DM's 'dictatorship' would not be tolerated and demanding compensation for the ruined crops.
Later, police allegedly resorted to force on the orders of the district magistrate. Farmer leader Ashok Prasad Singh claimed that protesters, including women, were manhandled. He said he was beaten, injured and his kurta torn. "The police detained the Buxar MP and other dozens of farmers' leaders in their bid to suppress the voices of protest," Singh alleged, adding that many farmers were injured when force was used to disperse them.
Singh further claimed that MP Sudhakar Singh, Mohammad Kamran, Dinesh Kumar and he himself were forcibly taken and detained at the distant Akbarpur police station. Sudhar Singh later posted a video on social media, questioning legality of the action against him during the ongoing Parliament session.
The agitation is a continuation of the JKM's protest against the Nawada district administration's decision to invoke emergency provisions under Section 40 of the 2013 Act for the land acquisition. In a press note issued a day earlier, the organisation had described the move as illegal, factually misleading and a punishable offence under Section 84 of the Act.
It argued that emergency powers apply only in cases of national defence, security or a Parliament-declared emergency-not for constructing a local reservoir or pond-and accused the district magistrate of misleading the state government and the public. The farmers' body has demanded immediate action against the Nawada DM and adequate compensation for crop losses, warning that any delay could force the agitation to escalate to the national level.
Nawada DM Ravi Prakash could not be reached out for his comments on the matter, despite several attempts....
