PATNA, Sept. 29 -- Over 150 students from the Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar residential school in Buxar staged a 30-kilometre protest march on Sunday, demanding immediate improvements to their hostel's basic facilities, including electricity, water, adequate security, and hygienic food, officials said. The students, all under 15 years of age, began their journey from the hostel in Rampur, Kesath block, at approximately 8 am. On their way, police officials attempted to halt the procession, while the Dumraon SDO and the district welfare officer (DWO) arrived at the spot to address the students. Despite their attempts to explain that the grievances would be reviewed, the students remained adamant about presenting their demands directly to the district magistrate. Upon reaching the district headquarters, the demonstrators gathered at the railway station road near Ambedkar Chowk and blocked traffic, specifically demanding the dismissal of the DWO. The Sadar SDM, Awinash Kumar, and the sub-tehsildar eventually directed the students to the Collectorate, assuring them that their legitimate concerns would be addressed. In response to the demonstration, district magistrate Sahila has ordered a formal probe into the situation, appointing an investigative committee led by DDC Niharika Chhavi to examine the allegations. The administration has issued a show-cause notice to the district welfare officer (DWO), Arbind Kumar. While Kumar defended the administration by stating that meals are provided according to the mandated menu and attributing utility disruptions to recent adverse weather, the district administration has pledged to conduct a thorough evaluation of the students' claims, promising strict action against any officials found responsible for negligence. "The children were misled and brought here," Kumar had said. The Ambedkar hostel in Ara has been relocated to Rampur, Buxar, due to the dilapidated state of the original building. While students were previously assured of a transfer to a new facility in the block headquarters of Mahdaah, those promises remain unfulfilled. Allegations of severe neglect have emerged, with students reporting a lack of basic necessities, including consistent electricity, water, adequate security, and teaching staff. Furthermore, students have raised concerns regarding food quality, specifically citing the presence of insects in their meals. Despite a total population of 450 students, reports indicate that only a fraction are receiving adequate food services.
