PATNA, Sept. 1 -- The Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) has put on hold its decision to invite applications for Teachers' Recruitment Examination (TRE)- 4 from September 1. A notification issued by the examination controller of the BPSC on Monday said that in view of the changes in the procedure of recruitment, the notification for filling application for 32,388 vacancies has been cancelled. "A fresh date will be announced soon," said the notification. On August 27, after a long agitation of students, the government had relented to their demand for one-phase examination for TRE-4, instead of two tier, and single result for single candidate, unlike earlier when one candidate qualified for multiple posts. In another development, the date for filling up applications for the Secondary Teachers' Eligibility Test Examination (STET) has also been extended to September 15, 2026. The last date for STET was August 31, but the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) issued a notification for extension of date on Sunday. The STET appearing candidates will also be eligible to apply for TRE-4. The government had also cancelled the letter regarding the change of syllabus for TRE-4 issued on August 24 in view of the new pattern to be adopted. The government had issued notification for 32,388 vacancies on August 18 and the number was increased following students' protest by another 866 vacancies to take the total to 33274. The number of vacancies in set to further rise with new additions. TRE4 will be the first exam for teachers after the implementation of the domicile policy. In a pre-election announcement, former chief minister Nitish Kumar had in August announced preference to domicile in teachers' recruitment. TRE-4 has been pending for a long time and was a big issue ahead of Assembly election also, but it got delayed for one reason or the other, including demand for conduct of Secondary Teachers' Eligibility Test (STET) prior to TRE-4. The STET was eventually held in October-November, 2025 and now another one will be held. In TRE-1 & 2, 170,000 and 70,000 teachers were appointed, while in TRE-3 against 87,774 vacancies, only 66,603 could be filled....
