Bihar SI, prisoner among 6 dead in road accident in UP's Unnao
PATNA, May 27 -- Six people, including a Bihar police sub-inspector and an under trial prisoner of Siwan district jail, died and 21 others were injured after a double-decker AC bus carrying 40 passengers overturned on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway near Nibha Kheda village in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao district around 5.15 am on Tuesday, police said.
Siwan SP Puran Jha told HT that SI Ravi Charan Ram, 58, along with three constables was escorting CS Tomar alias Chhatrasal Singh, back to Siwan jail after producing him before the court of first class judicial magistrate of Gurugram (Haryana) in connection with an Arms Act case on Monday. "Singh was lodged in Siwan jail in a murder case," an officer said.
"On information, six police personnel, including a DSP, two ambulances and a vehicle carrying the brother and two sons of the deceased SI rushed to the spot," Jha said. Meanwhile, Unnao district magistrate Ghanshyam Meena and UP senior superintendent of police Jai Prakash Singh also reached the spot to take stock of the situation.
Constable Ramji who was injured in the accident, said, "We boarded the bus for Gorakhpur from Delhi at 8.30 pm on Monday. All passengers were fast asleep. I woke up to an overturned bus. We later found the SI and the prisoner had died."
Dr Anoop Kumar Tiwari of Auras CHC said police brought 28 injured passengers to the centre after the accident, of whom six were declared dead. He said, "Twenty-one critically injured passengers were referred to the trauma centre in Lucknow after primary treatment, while one woman was discharged."
According to a preliminary investigation of UP police, the driver lost control of the vehicle after dozing off. Eyewitnesses said the bus hit a divider before it overturned. Police said most passengers were from UP's Basti, Siddharthnagar and Gorakhpur.
In a post on X, UP CM Yogi Adityanath and Bihar CM Samrat Choudhary termed the loss of lives as "extremely saddening and heart-rending". They expressed their condolences to the bereaved families and wished speedy recovery of the injured. Choudhary also expressed grief over SI's death.
Seven people were injured after the police vehicle they were travelling in overturned on Jamui-Sikandra main road on Tuesday. Police said the vehicle went out of control when a goat suddenly came on the road and the driver rammed a roadside tree to save the animal.
The team was on its way to an observation home in Jamui with two minor inmates.The injured include the driver, the two inmates, constables Ravi Kumar and Sarwan Kumar, chowkidar Alakh Niranjan, and SI Santosh Kumar who suffered serious head injuries in the accident....
