PATNA, Sept. 3 -- Bihar chief minister Samrat Chaudhary on Wednesday launched a state-wide health screening campaign aimed at examining 60 million residents above the age of 30 years and creating a digital health record for every citizen, said a press release from the chief minister's office. The chief minister flagged off "jagrukta raths" (awareness vehicles) for all 38 districts at a ceremony held at Patna's Urja auditorium. The campaign, titled "Jaanch evam Upchar - Chikitsa Aapke Dwar Abhiyan" (Screening and Treatment - Healthcare at Your Doorstep), has been planned from September 2 to November 30, 2026. Under the drive, health workers will visit homes to conduct primary check-ups and counselling for citizens above 30 years of age. Patients requiring further care will be referred to facilities ranging from Ayushman arogya mandirs to district hospitals, the release said. The screening will cover diabetes, high blood pressure, common cancers, heart disease, respiratory and lung ailments, and fatty liver disease. "Get screened so that you don't fall ill in the first place," Chaudhary said, adding that timely detection was the only route to effective treatment. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union health minister JP Nadda for the campaign's broader direction, with state health minister Nishant overseeing implementation in Bihar.The CM said that the initiative would run alongside an ongoing anaemia-screening drive targeting one crore people. Together, the two efforts aim to build digital health records for all the citizens in Bihar, to be stored securely and drawn upon whenever future treatment is needed, the release added. Chaudhary pointed to recent gains in the state's hospital infrastructure. District hospitals performed just 2,428 operations in June; that figure has since risen to more than 8,000 in a single month, he said, alongside a drop in patient referrals out of these facilities. District and sub-divisional hospitals have also expanded their surgical range, now performing procedures for 45 categories of ailments, up from 36, a shift officials say is bringing better care closer to patients' homes. To strengthen primary healthcare further, the government will roll out "Mission Kayakalp," aimed at upgrading primary health centres (PHCs), additional PHCs, and sub-centres so that quality care is available closer to communities. Chaudhary also announced that nursing and paramedical colleges would begin offering foreign-language training to students, widening their employment prospects both within India and abroad.
