PATNA, Oct. 2 -- The Bihar government has decided to release 44 prisoners on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti on October 2nd on humanitarian grounds. Earlier, in 2018 on the occasion of 159 birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, 43 prisoners were released from the different jails in Bihar. Eight years later, prisoners are being released again on this year on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, said an official of home department. Officials aware of the matter said in addition financial assistance will be provided to the family members of crime victim. An amount of Rs.3.86 crore will be distributed among the 1,820 beneficiary families. Those prisoners to be released are elderly inmates in different jails and serving long-term prison sentences. Among them, two prisoners are over 90 years old, eight prisoners are over 80 years old and 20 prisoners are in the 70 to 80-year age group. Additionally, one prisoner suffering from a serious illness is also being released on humanitarian grounds. One female prisoner who will be released is also included among the inmates, who has completed a sentence of approximately 20 years in Purnea Jail....
