Bihar govt downgrades security covers of Lalu, Rabri, Tej Pratap
PATNA, June 6 -- In a major administrative decision, the Bihar government late on Thursday drastically reduced the security of former chief ministers Lalu Prasad, Rabri Devi and their eldest son Tej Pratap Yadav.
Both Lalu and Rabri had Z-plus and Z security covers, which means protection by specially armed security personnel, but now they will be protected by Bihar Special Armed Police (BSAP) personnel, as per the government order.
The new security arrangement for the two RJD leaders features 10 BSAP personnel, two bodyguards from the Patna District Force, and a pilot and bulletproof car, an official said.
The new order regarding the security of the Lalu-Rabri family was issued after a review by the state home department. The revised arrangement is said to be in line with SSG 2010 guidelines, and the scaling down of security is expected to be implemented in phases.
The Z+ security is among the highest protection categories, involving nearly 55 personnel, bulletproof vehicles and advanced communication systems. Z category protection generally involves around 22 personnel and comparatively fewer defensive arrangements for protectees across the country.
The home department has maintained the security cover of Leader of Opposition in Bihar Assembly Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, Pataliputra MP Misa Bharti and Tejashwi's wife Rajshree Yadav.
The security of Lalu Prasad's elder son and former minister Tej Pratap Yadav has been cut down. He had Y category security, but now he will get the facility of only one bodyguard. Officials said that he would now be provided only the standard security cover available to former MLAs/ministers....
