Bihar Governor removes magadh university vc
PATNA, May 21 -- In a sudden turn of events, Bihar Gocernor Lt General (retired) Syed Ata Hasnain late Wednesday evening removed Magadh University Vice Chancellor SP Shahi, who was on an extension after the end of his three-year tenure, and handed over the charge to Prof Dilip Kumar Kesari.
This is the first removal of the VC since Hasnain took charge on March 14. What exactly led to the sudden removal is not known, but it is said to be the fallout of complaints against the VC reaching the Lok Bhawan.
"In the light of 2013 Supreme Court order, the Chancellor is pleased to direct Dr Kesari, senior most professor of Magadh University, to perform the duties of the office of VC of MU with immediate effect till further order or till the appointment of a regular VC," said thr notification issued by Gopal Meena, principal secretary to the Gocernor.
Kesari, who is professor in the department of Zoology, MU, has been directed "not to take any policy decision without prior approval of the Chancellor, as laid down in previous Lok Bhawan orders".
"Shahi, who had been given the officiating charge of MU VC on February 10, 2026, is relieved from all such responsibilities with immediate effect," says the notification.
Last week, former BJP MP from Aurangabad Sushil Singh had levelled serious corruption charges against the MU VC in a latter to the Governor with a detailed report and a copy was also sent to the Additional Chief Secretary of the Vigilance Department, Bihar government, seeking probe.
In fact, quite a few MU VCs also landed in trouble in the past over corruption issues.
In 2022, months after being accused in a corruption case, the then MU VC Rajendra Prasad had to tender his resignation and was later arrested after former Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar gave the prosecution sanction. Several other university officials also landed in jail in the case.
In 2018, the then governor Lalji Tandon, in consultation with the state government, had asked MU VC Qamar Ahsan to resign with immediate effect for "failing to discharge his duties" barely a week after being served show cause notice....
