BDO arrested, cop girlfriend detained in case of dowry death
PATNA, July 9 -- A block development officer (BDO) has been arrested while his girlfriend was detained in connection with the suspicious death of his wife at the latter's Mithanpura residence in Muzaffarpur on July 3, police said on Wednesday.
Amrita Kumari's family accused Manoj Kumar Shah and his relatives of demanding Rs.10 lakh in dowry and subjecting her to repeated harassment and abuse. They also alleged that Manoj, posted with Jale block in Darbhanga, was in a relationship with one Anu Kumari, a sub-inspector from Sitamarhi posted in Begusarai, which led to further harassment and torture.
The case gained attention after CCTV footage surfaced, allegedly showing Amrita being assaulted and dragged by her in-laws months before her death.
Following her death, Manoj went into hiding with his mobile phone switched off. Two phones were seized from him whose call details are being scanned. Initial probe made it clear that Manoj was in a relationship with Anu for a long time which led to frequent quarrels with Amrita, who had to face mental and physical torture, police said.
Muzaffarpur SSP Kantesh Mishra told HT that Manoj was arrested by police late Tuesday. "BDO's mobile phones, along with all evidence, were sent for forensic examination," he added.
During interrogation, Manoj told police that his wife died by suicide after consuming some poisonous substance. Teams are now conducting raids to arrest Manoj's family who are missing since the incident. Police are also interrogating Anu at the Mithanpura police station to find out her involvement.
Amrita's brother, Rajkumar Rai, told police that on the night of July 3, they received information that her health deteriorated. When they reached Muzaffarpur, no one was at home. After a frantic search, her body was found at sadar hospital. An FIR has been registered under section 80(2) of the BNS....
