PATNA, Oct. 6 -- Patna's All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) performed its third liver transplant and first deceased-donor kidney transplant as part of a multi-organ donation procedure, marking a significant expansion of its transplant programme, said a statement issued by the institute on Monday.
The liver transplant, conducted on October 2, was the institute's second in two months. The recipient, a 29-year-old man suffering from Wilson disease and end-stage liver disease, underwent a nearly 12-hour procedure and is recovering under multidisciplinary care, the press release said. The deceased donor, a Biharsharif resident, had suffered a severe brain injury after falling from a staircase and was declared brain dead according to prescribed protocols. The donor's liver, both kidneys and corneas were retrieved in a coordinated procedure. The liver and one kidney were transplanted at AIIMS Patna, while the second kidney was allocated through the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO), Bihar, for transplantation within the state. The corneas were donated for sight-restoring transplants.
The kidney was transplanted into a 19-year-old girl with chronic kidney disease who had been dependent on dialysis. The procedure was AIIMS Patna's 15th renal transplant and its first deceased-donor kidney transplant, the release said.
The liver transplant was performed by the department of surgical gastroenterology, led by Prof (Dr) Utpal Anand, with Dr Kunal Parasar, Dr Basant Narayan Singh and Dr Kislay Kant. Prof (Dr) Nishant Sahay led the team of anaesthesiologists. The renal transplant team was led by Dr Kamlesh Gunjan, with Dr Naveen Kumar, Dr Saket Singh and Dr Nitish Kumar.
