PATNA/VAISHALI, Sept. 11 -- Seven labourers sustained injuries on Thursday morning when a heavy launcher machine toppled while shifting a steel structure at an under-construction bridge site in Vaishali district, Bihar. District authorities quickly clarified that the main bridge structure itself did not collapse, countering early rumours about the collapse the bridge. The incident occurred at Jabalpur-Itwarpur village under Lalganj block on the Gandak bridge stretch of the Bakarpur-Manikpur project. The stretch forms part of the NH-139W four-lane highway under the centrally sponsored Bharatmala Pariyojana, which aims to link district headquarters through economic corridors. Vaishali district magistrate Varsha Singh confirmed that the launcher "toppled while moving the steel structure from one span to the other." One labourer trapped under the debris was rescued. Four of the injured were shifted to Hajipur Sadar Hospital and the remaining three received treatment at the Lalganj primary health centre. She also ordered an inquiry into the accident. Road construction department (RCD) minister Kumar Shailendra described the event as the result of a technical problem during the movement of the launching girder. "Three workers sustained minor injuries and are fully healthy, while one worker suffered a leg injury and has been sent to hospital for necessary medical treatment. He is stable," the minister said. A detailed technical investigation is under way, the minister added, and necessary action will follow its findings. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which is executing the project, reiterated that the safety of workers and all stakeholders remains its highest priority across projects, including this one.
