6th brain malaria death in E Singhbhum; health minister visit deferred
Jamshedpur, July 6 -- The East Singhbhum district administration went into alert mode after the sixth death due to cerebral malaria reported from (Tilkagarh) Haludboni area under Parsudih police station (PS) even as a total of 1,059 cerebral malaria patients were identified in testing of 18,123 persons since June 29 till July 4, officials said on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the scheduled Potka visit of health minister Dr Irfan Ansari next week has been postponed even as the national probe team left for Delhi on Sunday.
"One brain malaria patient died during treatment in a private hospital while three more died in Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College Hospital (MGMMCH). At least 59 patients were admitted in Jamshedpur Sadar Hospital (JSH) in June and 14 in July. Out of these, 31 have been released after treatment while 39 are in stable condition and three have been referred for better treatment," a district administration statement said on Friday.
The district health department team visited Tilkagarh after the death of Ganesh Besra on Friday and tested blood samples of his family members and neighbours and 112 persons at a camp in Tilkagarh ground, none of which was found positive.
Four minor children from Potka Lakshmi Sardar,Rahul Sardar, Subola Sardar and her sister Khusboo Sardar have died of brain malaria while another minor girl from Adityapur Gudiya Das died in MGMMCH on Thursday.
Central team returns to Delhi
Officials said on Sunday that the nine-member team of experts from Delhi and Ranchi, which camped in Potka and Jamshedpur since Friday, left Jamshedpur on Sunday.
"The team will submit its report to the department concerned in the Union health ministry. State health minister Dr Irfan Ansari was also scheduled to visit Potka and meet patients during the week starting tomorrow but it has been postponed now. He is expected to visit next week," the official informed.
"MPWs and health workers have been deputed in high numbers in Potka and other affected blocks. A team of 125 doctors from MGMMCH and 200 health workers held intense testing drive in Potka, Musabani, Dumuria and Ghatshila blocks from June 29 to July 3. Sahiyas have covered 17, 741 house-to-house under the ongoing mass survey. Total 1,059 persons have been found positive after testing 18, 123 persons till now. The positivity rate, however, has been dropping due to massive testing and treatment exercise," Dr Sahir Pal, East Singhbhum district civil surgeon, told the media.
"Brain malaria is no separate disease. In medical parlance it is called cerebral malaria which is caused by plasmodium falciparum parasites and is an acute malaria condition. If timely treatment is not done, the infection spreads to brain and other organs, leading to death," added Dr Pal.
"The administration has been taking all necessary measures with topmost priority to arrest the spread and proper treatment to the affected. Special drives for testing, treatment and medicine distribution have been ongoing. Awareness campaign has also been launched across the district," Rajiv Ranjan, East Singhbhum DC , said.
Seraikela-Kharsawan DC Nitish Kumar Singh also held a video conferencing meeting with the district health department and all the BDOs and COs for effective malaria control drives across the district....
