5 cops injured in attack by liquor mafia in Supaul
SUPAUL, March 27 -- At least five police personnel, including the station house officer (SHO), were injured when suspected liquor smugglers attacked them at Sitapur village, which falls under the jurisdiction of Karjain police station in Supaul district on Wednesday night, police said on Thursday.
The injured police personnel were part of a team led by SHO Manish Kumar.
The team was returning after arresting Saroj Kumar Mehta, an alleged liquor smuggler and accused in a liquor smuggling case, when it was attacked."
The injured policemen have been identified as Anil Choudhary, Manish Kumar, Santosh Paswan, Vinesh Kumar Sah (All constables and posted at Karjain police station) besides SHO Manish Kumar of Karjain police station.
"We were acting as per law but some of the villagers allegedly involved in liquor smuggling attacked the police in an organised way in which several policemen were injured," the SHO said, adding "All the injured were rushed to the referral hospital, Raghopur for treatment."
The doctor said, "After preliminary treatment, the injured policemen were discharged."
On the other hand, villagers have alleged that the police team with no women cops misbehaved with women during the late night raid and the team also fired in the air to intimidate the villagers.
However, police have denied the report of firing.
Sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Surendra Kumar said, "Police have arrested the accused Saroj Kumar Mehta and identity of the people involved in the attack on police team is being ascertained." He added, "Stringent action will be taken against them." He ruled out the report of firing.
Police have lodged a case and further probe is underway. "Soon after the identity is ascertained, police will launch a manhunt to nab the accused," police said....
