4 labourers die while cleaning septic tank in Gopalganj distt
PATNA, Aug. 30 -- Four labourers died on Saturday afternoon after being exposed to poisonous gas inside a septic tank in Gopalganj district, officials said.
A youth also fainted while trying to rescue them and was referred to Sadar Hospital for further treatment.
The deceased were identified as Bunty Baitha, Tipu Mian and Umesh Yadav, while the fourth victim was yet to be identified at the time of filing this report.
The incident occurred in Sonaipatti village, where the labourers had entered a newly built septic tank at an under-construction building owned by Mohammad Gyasuddin to remove construction material.
District officials said the labourers died of suffocation after entering the septic tank. While asphyxiation is likely to be the primary cause of death, the exact cause will be confirmed only after the postmortem examination, said Gopalganj Superintendent of Police (SP) Vinay Tiwari.
According to police officials, the labourers were later pulled out of the septic tank and taken to Sadar Hospital, where they were declared dead.
An official of the Gopalganj district administration, familiar with the matter, said the administration would provide compensation to the victims' families under the Disaster Management Fund.
"We are examining whose negligence led to the incident, as preliminary investigations indicate that safety protocols were not followed. Nevertheless, we will conduct a detailed investigation into the matter," the official said....
