PATNa, Sept. 3 -- The death of four persons in a suspected spurious liquor case in Barh took a turn on Wednesday when police alleged that one of the three accused poisoned the deceased to avenge his sister's love affair. However, the girl and the deceased's family members refuted the police theory, demanding proof for the claim and terming it a "cover up" to conceal a hooch tragedy. The deceased, four friends, died on August 30 after allegedly consuming spurious liquor during a fish party at Bedha village under Sahi police station in Barh sub-division. Police identified the deceased as Pankaj Kumar (45), Nishu Kumar (30), Vikas Kumar (40), and Shashi Kumar (32). It was widely speculated as another hooch tragedy, even though police had launched a massive investigation. Citing investigation clues and confessions from one of the accused, Patna Rural SP Kundan Kumar said on Wednesday that it was a revenge killing. "Prime accused Lali Kumar confessed that he organised the entire plot and poisoned the liquor to kill the deceased as vengeance because one of them -- Nishu Kumar-was having an affair with his sister and three others mocked him for it. The case cracked within 48 hours," said the rural SP. He said the accused invited the deceased to his home for a fish-liquor party as a setup and then killed them by mixing poison. As soon as the police statement was circulated and caused an uproar in the state, the accused's sister, who is married to an army man, challenged the police theory of her affair with the deceased. She even went to the Barh police station and asked the police to submit proof of her affair.
