3 children swept away while bathing in Ganga; one dead
BUXAR/BETTIAH, May 30 -- A 13-year-old boy drowned and a 7-year-old son went missing after three children bathing at Pulia Ganga Ghat under Buxar police station area were swept away by strong currents of the Ganga river on Friday morning, police said.
Manoj Singh, a resident of Ahirauli village, said, "I had gone to the ghat to perform some rituals when my only son Mukul Singh, 7, and brother-in-law Chhotu Singh's son Sanjeev Singh, 13, and one more relative went to take a bath in the Ganga."
"While bathing all three children waded into deep waters and began drowning. Those present at the scene rushed to rescue them and pulled out Sanjeev and the other child, while Mukul was swept away. Sanjeev was later declared dead at the hospital," he added.
On information, a team from Buxar police station went to the spot and launched a search and rescue operation for Mukul. Meanwhile, the victim's body has been sent for post-mortem examination and the rescued child is undergoing treatment, an officer said.
Three girls from Tadaspur village were swept away in the Gandak river in Gopalganj district after a boat carrying six people capsized around 7:30 am on Friday, police said, adding that the boat sank midstream near Dumariya under Mohammadpur police station limits.
Sidhwaliya CO Munna Kumar said the incident took place when the three children along with an elderly woman and a girl were crossing the river to pluck green moong crops. "While the boatman rescued the elderly woman and a girl, the three minors were swept away," he said.
Locals alerted the police who launched a rescue operation. "The girls have been identified as Chandan Yadav's daughters Kriti Kumari, 7, and Riya Kumari, 9, and Majitar Yadav's daughter Ananya Kumari, 9. An SDRF team has also been deployed to the spot," Kumar added....
