3 children among 6 killed as truck hits auto-rickshaw in Khagaria
PURNEA, May 19 -- Six people were killed, including three children, and six others suffered serious injuries after a high-speed truck coming from the opposite direction hit an auto-rickshaw carrying them near Thatha village on NH- 31 under Mansi police station in Bihar's Khagaria district Monday afternoon, police said.
Police said the three-wheeler, which was carrying 12 people to Maheshkhunt, was hit when the truck driver lost control of the vehicle. The collision was so intense that the auto-rickshaw was damaged beyond recognition and a four-wheeler parked at a distance was also hit and damaged.
"Three people died on the spot, two others died en route to the hospital and one died during treatment," SHO Deepak Kumar told HT over the phone, adding "The condition of all the injured persons is said to be critical." The victims include a two-month-old baby, a 14-year-old girl and a boy, he added.
An eyewitness said, "We saw people flinging onto the road due to the collision's impact. We rushed to the spot and dragged the remaining people from the auto-rickshaw. However, the truck driver managed to escape before we reached the spot. Soon, police arrived and they took the victims to a hospital."
The SHO said, "Efforts are underway to identify the other victims. So far, we identified the girl as Swati Kumari of Pasraha. Meanwhile, the families of the injured have been notified. The toll may increase as some of the injured are critical." A source at the hospital said three injured have been referred to a higher centre.
"The bodies have been sent for post-mortem. Further investigation is being carried on and we have launched a manhunt for the driver. A case will soon be lodged. Meanwhile, we seized the truck and are recording statements from eyewitnesses and the injured," Kumar added....
