3,911 wetlands identified across Bihar
MADHUBANI, May 10 -- The Bihar State Wetland Authority has identified 3,911 wetlands measuring more than 2.25 hectares across the state following an extensive district-wise survey, officials said on Saturday. Katihar and Purnea districts have reported the highest number of wetlands.
To streamline documentation and conservation planning, the state environment, forest and climate change department has developed "Save Bihar Wetlands" mobile application to collect data on water quality, biodiversity, ecological significance, encroachments and potential threats.
Officials in the department said that forest guards and field-level personnel, under the guidance of the additional principal chief conservator of forests (climate change and wetlands), are preparing preliminary documentation of the wetlands through this application.
As part of the statewide campaign being carried out in compliance with the Supreme Court directives on wetland conservation, a capacity-building programme was organised in Madhubani on Saturday, district public relations officer Parimal Kumar said.
During the programme, wetland expert Dr Saroj Kumar Barik conducted a session for personnel of Madhubani forest division, training them to use the application, including data collection, geo-tagging, biodiversity documentation and reporting of threats to wetlands....
