2 dead, 2 missing as seven girls drown in Ganga river in Patna
PATNA, Aug. 18 -- Two girls died and as many went missing after seven girls drowned while bathing in river Ganga at Ranisarai ghat under Bakhatiyarpur police station on Monday morning, police said. Of them, three were rescued by residents, while search and rescue operations are underway.
According to locals, seven girls went to the ghat to bathe around 5.30 am when one of the girls waded into deep waters and started drowning. Other girls jumped into the river in an attempt to save her but were swept away by strong currents. Locals rushed to the scene to rescue them.
"When all the girls were drowning, a man from another village threw a bamboo stick to save them. Holding on to the stick, three girls came out of the river, but four others, including two sisters, were swept away," a resident who witnessed the incident said.
Police along with SDRF reached the spot and launched a rescue operation. The teams fished out bodies of two sisters and were looking for two more sisters. BDO Ujjwalkant said the victims' families would be given a compensation of Rs.20,000 each and Rs.4 lakh later on....
