175 animals rescued from illegal slaughter, 7 smugglers arrested
BHABUA, July 14 -- Kaimur police arrested seven alleged cattle smugglers, including four from Uttar Pradesh, on GT Road (NH-19) near Mohania Toll Plaza, officers said on Monday.
Police said that an intensive vehicle check was initiated on NH-19 following a tip-off that a container carrying cattle for illegal slaughter was headed from Bihar to UP late Sunday.
Kaimur SP Shikhar Choudhary sent a special team under Durgawati SHO Girish Kumar for the checking. During the search, a suspected container with a UP registration number was stopped.
During a search, 170 animals were found tied up brutally. The driver and three smugglers were taken into custody when they failed to produce valid documents for transporting the animals.
They were identified as driver Abid (38) from Shamli district, and smugglers Rahis (38) and Arshazan (20) from Baghpat, and Shaukeen (24) from Muzaffarnagar district in UP, police said.
The arrested smugglers confessed that the cattle were being transported to UP to be handed over to a person for illegal slaughter. The animals were rescued and the container was seized.
Hours later, Kudra police intercepted a UP-registration number pick-up van on NH-19 near Chilbili Overbridge under Kudra police station area, rescuing five animals and arresting three.
The accused- Sheikh Kurshid Ahmed, Jahid Kureishi and Mohammed Riyaz Kureishi, all from Kaimur, were also allegedly taking the animals to UP for illegal slaughter, police said.
SP Choudhary said that police registered cases under provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, in both the incidents and further legal action is currently underway.
"In both cases, the police are investigating the animals' origin and specific destinations, as well as identifying the persons involved in this interstate smuggling racket," the SP added....
