1 dead, 3 injured as cop opens fire at villagers
PATNA, Nov. 4 -- A villager was killed and three others were injured, two of them seriously, after an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of police allegedly opened fire at them with his service revolver when they caught him sneaking into their house at night in Balirajgarh village in Bihar's Madhubani district, police said on Tuesday.
The ASI, identified as Chandramohan Singh, is absconding. He was posted at a police picket under the Babubarhi police station limits.
Police said the accused ASI had been deployed to guard a historical site in the area and had allegedly developed an illicit relationship with a woman in the village, whom he used to visit.
"On Monday night, when he was inside the house, other family members caught him. Soon, villagers also began gathering at the spot. In a panic, he opened fire, killing one person and injuring three others, including a woman," said a police officer who reached the spot soon after the incident.
The ASI fled the scene, triggering tension in the area, as villagers pressed the police and local administration to ensure his early arrest.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Yogendra Kumar ordered heavy deployment of police personnel in the area and said the accused ASI had been suspended with immediate effect, while the process to dismiss him would be initiated soon. He also formed five teams to track down the absconding ASI and announced a reward of Rs.25,000 for information about his whereabouts.
According to local accounts, family members were asleep when the ASI allegedly entered the house with suspicious intentions. Phulo Devi, a woman living in the neighbouring house, heard a noise and spotted a suspicious person, following which she raised an alarm. Hearing the commotion, villagers from nearby houses rushed to the spot.
"Seeing so many people gathering at the spot, the ASI panicked and started firing indiscriminately. After firing around five to six rounds, he took advantage of the darkness and fled," a local resident said.
Upon receiving the information, a police team immediately reached the spot and took all the injured to a government hospital. "Fifty-year-old Ashok Yadav succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, while three others are undergoing treatment," the district police said.
Among the injured, Phulo Devi (40) sustained a bullet injury to her abdomen and is in critical condition. Vijendra Yadav (45) was shot in the neck, while Dhanik Lal Yadav sustained a bullet injury to his leg. All three are undergoing treatment at Madhubani Sadar Hospital.
The incident triggered widespread anger among the locals. When the District Magistrate and SP visited the aggrieved family, one woman reportedly grabbed the DM's collar, seeking immediate action against the accused.
Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar assembly and RJD working president Tejashwi Yadav slammed the Samrat Choudhary government's inability to curb crimes.
"There have been uninterrupted crimes in Bihar. This incident is unprecedented when a police personnel has tried to rape two women of a family and when resisted by the other family members, he shoots them. Protectors have turned into criminals, but where is the CM Samrat Choudhary? This accused ASI has escaped, or has he allowed to escape? Will he caught and face an encounter?" he said, while talking to the media.
He also accused the government of failing to act against police personnel involved in criminal incidents, referring to other alleged cases of custodial deaths and killings involving men in uniform....
