'Mentally-challenged' youth killed by mob in Muzaffarpur, 4 held
PATNA, April 24 -- A purportedly mentally-challenged man was on Wednesday lynched my a mob in Chakmoglani locality of Saraiya police station area of Muzaffarnagar district, leading to communal tension in the area as the victim was from a different community. He was reportedly killed on the suspicion of theft, the police said.
The police arrested four accused after a complaint by the victim's family, but hundreds of people reached the police station with sticks and tried to release the accused, aggravating the tension. Supporters of the arrested people alleged that the victim Rahul Shah, 25, had entered a house at night with an ulterior motive. Shah's family members said that he had merely gone for a walk.
DSP (West-1) Suchitra Kumari said an FIR registered against six named and several unknown persons on the basis of the statement of victim's sister on the charges of confinement, assault and murder.
Police said that the victim, a resident of Morsandi village under Motipur police station area, had arrived at his sister's house at Chakmoglani on Tuesday evening. After dinner, he went for a walk in the locality and mysteriously disappeared.
Bhulan Shah, deceased's brother-in-law, claims that Rahul was mentally unsound.
On Wednesday morning, the victim's sister got an information that people of a particular community caught him on suspicion of theft at Madwapakad village. The mob tied Rahul to a pole and beat him with sticks till he fell unconscious.
Meanwhile, police rushed to the spot, rescued Rahul and took him to the hospital where he succumbed to the injuries late Wednesday, police said.
When Rahul's body reached the Chakmoglani village after post-mortem, there was palpable anger among villagers.
SSP Kantesh Mishra said, "Currently, the situation is under control. Magistrates, police personnel and para-military forces have been deployed to maintain aw and order. We have appealed to the villagers to maintain peace. An FIR has been registered against the suspects."...
