Trailblazer who challenged the 'hero' stereotype
Mumbai, Oct. 9 -- Nana Patekar, one of Indian cinema's most distinctive actors for over five decades, died at 75 after a severe cardiac arrest in Goa.
For nearly five decades, Nana was the face of emotions difficult to articulate - anger, humiliation, powerlessness, frustration, disgust with corruption and despair at the system. He played men who had swallowed too much bitterness that eventually broke them.
As MNS chief Raj Thackeray said in his tribute, "That was Nana's great gift: he became a kind of pressure valve for the ordinary Indian."
Yet behind the formidable actor was a man remembered for his warmth, humour and startling candour. Rajinikanth recalled the friend who could "laugh like a child".
