Suryakumar blames lack of partnerships in big loss
Ahmedabad, Feb. 23 -- India captain Suryakumar Yadav felt the game against South Africa was lost in the Powerplay, where three wickets fell to make the 188-run chase even tougher.
The co-hosts suffered a huge defeat in their opening Super 8 game after coming into it unbeaten from the group stage.
"Sometimes, you have to think you cannot win the game in the Powerplay but you can lose it. We did not have the partnerships we needed. We could have batted better," Suryakumar said at the post-match presentation.
India lost their top three of Ishan Kishan (0), Tilak Varma (1) and Abhishek Sharma (15), early to slip to 26/3. India will have to get out a lot more from their misfiring top order to go deep in the tournament.
"It's part of the game. We will learn from it, sit back and bounce back. Hopefully bat well, bowl well and field well. Keep it simple. That is what we will try to do," the India captain said of the next game against Zimbabwe that now assumes greater importance.
South Africa captain Aiden Markram, meanwhile, felt the critical factor was to adapt to the wicket at the Narendra Modi Stadium. That was something the Proteas did really well after also losing three early wickets.
"It was a different type of wicket to what we have had here. Boys assessed that early and then to adapt to their plans," Markram said.
"The partnership (between Dewald Brevis and David Miller) put up, it kept us in the game.
"Happy for the bowlers. Starting the competition was tough, but tonight (they were brilliant)," he added....
