Mumbai, Oct. 22 -- For an audience that comprised some of the tallest names in Indian shooting, Suma Shirur began the evening with a story of a young girl. One that travelled from Panvel to Dadar and onwards to Worli in a red state transport bus to practice shooting. When a man sitting next to her asked the reason, it dawned on her as to why she was travelling four hours daily: to become an Olympian. That girl, and that Olympian, has now seen her dream of creating a state-of-the-art training facility in Navi Mumbai turn into reality. On Wednesday at Belapur, the Axis Bank Lakshya Shooting Club High Performance Centre was inaugurated by Suma in the company of Olympians Gagan Narang, Anjali Bhagwat, Rahi Sarnobat, Annu Raj Singh and Viren Rasquinha, and India's current national pistol coach Ronak Pandit, among others. The swanky multi-storey centre in Navi Mumbai has two 10m shooting ranges, strength and conditioning facilities, biomechanics assessment, recovery spaces and residential setup. Parth Mane, the 2024 junior world champion and team silver medallist at the 2026 Asian Games, is among its early handful of elite shooters who will call this centre their new home. Guiding them will be Suma, the former 10m air rifle world record holder and national shooting coach, who envisioned an all-inclusive high-performance centre not long after she started her academy in Panvel. "Olympians from my generation will agree that we never had access to anything," said the Dronacharya awardee. "So, I wanted to create things that I never got. And use my experience in creating an ecosystem where athletes don't waste time running around for things that are essential for their high performance. This centre is open for every athlete who aspires to put their life into shooting and dream of being an Olympian."...
