Scrap SIR, go back to ballot paper, demand Oppn leaders at joint rally
Mumbai, Oct. 5 -- Opposition leaders took to the streets of south Mumbai on Sunday, bringing together leaders from across party lines at the 'Virat Garjana Morcha' to protest the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls currently underway in the state.
The rally began at Metro Cinema and culminated outside the BMC headquarters, where thousands of protesters raised slogans against alleged 'vote chori' and sought the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray, addressing the gathering first, said the opposition's focus should remain on scrapping the SIR process, replacing EVMs with ballot papers and removing the CEC. Uddhav Thackeray, who addressed the crowd after Raj, accused the BJP of being incapable of running the government and alleged that it was misusing power to pursue political vendettas. Congress, NCP (SP) and other Opposition party leaders too joined the protest.
