sc seeks centre's reply on plea for msp revision
New Delhi, April 14 -- The Supreme Court on Monday sought Centre's response on a petition seeking upward revision of the minimum support price (MSP) on notified crops flagging the lack of such a mechanism to be a major reason leading to large number of farmer suicides.
A bench of CJI Surya Kant and justice Joymalya Bagchi issued notice on a PIL filed by three farmers-cum-social activists who said that the MSP fixed by the government does not take into account the weighted average cost of production. Seeking responses from the Union agriculture ministry, Director General of Foreign Trade and Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices, the bench observed, "You are asking us to rewrite economic policy."
The petition, argued by advocate Prashant Bhushan, pointed out that the official data placed in public domain demonstrates that the MSP procurement mechanism operated by the Centre is overwhelmingly confined to rice and wheat.htc...
