SC acquits murder convict jailed for 22 years, faults HC
India, Aug. 5 -- The Supreme Court on Tuesday acquitted a man who spent 22 years behind bars in a triple murder case, expressing shock that a procedural lapse by the Orissa high court had kept him in prison for an additional decade. A bench of Justice JB Pardiwala and K Vinod Chandran acquitted Arjun Jani, who was convicted of murder, holding that the evidence against him was unreliable. The top court also faulted the HC for refusing to condone the delay in filing his jail appeal, saying its insistence on a technical ground had cost Jani an additional decade of his life in prison.
