MUMBAI, Sept. 11 -- A serial cat killer carrying a bounty of Rs.50,000 is on the prowl in Govandi, leaving a trail of at least six mutilated, dead felines. RCF police investigating the case say they have identified a suspect, a homeless man, and are confident of arresting him soon. The cat deaths were reported by Rubina Pathan, 53, an animal lover and resident of Panjrapole in Govandi. RCF police said Pathan had found four dead cats in her locality on September 3. All of them had serious head injuries inflicted with a blunt object. She lodged a complaint with them after she found two more cats - one adult and a kitten - similarly murdered on September 5. Apart from the police, Pathan also alerted PETA. The bodies of the six cats have been sent to the Bai Sakarbai Dinshaw Petit Hospital for Animals in Parel for post-mortem. "Based on Pathan's complaint, we have registered a case against unknown persons and are using CCTV footage to trace the accused. He appears to be a disturbed individual," said an officer with the RCF police. The case has been registered under sections 11 (treating animals cruelly) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and section 325 (committing mischief by killing, poisoning) of the BNS. "I had been noticing cats with injuries to their bodies in our area as well as the odd one that was dead, since July. But I dismissed this and didn't take photos, so there was no point approaching the police," said Pathan, who has been feeding stray cats for six years. "But after finding the deceased cats in September, I decided to take pictures. I approached the police with the help of PETA," she said. Police claim they are close to making an arrest. "The suspect lives on the footpath and has been on the run since he realised we were onto him," said an officer. "We will be arresting him soon."
