Rents in nearby areas have spiked: Khair
India, May 20 -- Abdul Khair, 53, along with his family comprising 12-15 members, who lived in three separate tin rooms stacked one atop the other, was seen seated under the recently opened skywalk in Garib Nagar, after their rented homes were demolished on Tuesday. The family hails from Bihar and has been renting accommodation in the illegal shanty for 10 years.
"As soon as we learnt about the demolition drive, we started moving out our furniture. We have been paying Rs.5000 each month for rent. Now, people in neighbouring areas are asking for rents between Rs.8000 and Rs.15,000 per month for a slightly larger room built from tin," said Khair, who is unemployed, while others in his family work as delivery boys.
His nephew, whose family moved here 15 years ago, said no political party or leaders have "come to our rescue yet".
"We are sitting here with police asking us to leave every now and then. But where do we go with all our household goods," he said....
