New Delhi, July 28 -- Ragging complaints from higher educational institutions across India increased to 1,369 cases in 2025, marking over a 100% jump from 655 in 2022, the Centre told the Lok Sabha on Monday, maintaining that its response to the problem remains "corrective and preventive." Minister of state for education Sukanta Majumdar, in a written response to a set of questions from Trinamool Congress lawmaker Sayani Ghosh, said ragging complaints rose 46.9% in 2023 over the previous year, 12.7% in 2024, and 26.3% in 2025. Another 757 cases were reported this year till July 22, taking the cumulative count since 2022 to 4,827. "The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued Show Cause Notices to 107 HEIs including 18 Medical Colleges in 2025 for non-compliance with the mandatory provisions of the Anti-Ragging Regulations, 2009. These notices highlight lapses such as failure to secure anti-ragging undertakings from students and parents/guardians, and non-submission of institutional compliance reports despite repeated advisories and follow-ups," the minister said.
