MUMBAI, Aug. 11 -- In a special drive against illegal high-intensity headlights on vehicles, the Mumbai Traffic Police penalised 1,194 vehicles across 41 traffic divisions between August 6 and August 9 and collected Rs.7.5 lakh in fines. Action was taken against vehicles with HID (high-intensity discharge) headlights, auxiliary flashlights, and LED bars under section 235 of the Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Rules punishable under section 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act. According to the police, the primary objective of the campaign was to prevent accidents caused by lights that adversely affect the vision of oncoming drivers, potentially causing temporary blindness. A senior traffic police officer involved in the drive urged motorists to strictly adhere to traffic regulations and use low-beam headlights during night driving. "Road safety is everyone's responsibility. Citizens should cooperate with the traffic police to ensure safe travel for themselves as well as for others," the officer said....
