New Delhi, Sept. 17 -- Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said India should aspire to be among the early leaders in emerging technologies and asserted that the government is committed to a predictable and responsive policy environment. Chairing a roundtable with senior executives from leading domestic and international semiconductor companies, a day before the inauguration of SEMICON India 2026 in New Delhi, the PM also emphasised the importance of close collaboration between the government and the semiconductor industry in shaping India's technology future, a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office said. The discussions focused on research and development (R&D), talent development, trusted partnerships and preparations for new semiconductor ecosystem projects under SEMICON 2.0. Almost all participating companies are either already conducting R&D in India or have plans to expand their activities, according to a government statement. Several companies also committed to pursuing R&D in the country. Industry participants appreciated India's semiconductor talent development programme and expressed plans to join it in the future, the government said. The executives also recognised India as a trusted partner across the semiconductor manufacturing and supply-chain ecosystem, including precision manufacturing, product design, quality systems and advanced manufacturing. Modi had chaired a similar CEO/CXO roundtable during SEMICON India 2025.
