Petty politics, hate derailed the bill: PM attacks Oppn
CHENNAI, April 19 -- Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday alleged that the noble effort to pass women's reservation bill got derailed because the Congress and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) made it their "target of hatred and petty politics".
Speaking at an election rally in Coimbatore while canvassing for All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK)-led NDA alliance candidates, Modi alleged that the Congress and the DMK opposed the bill because they don't want women from ordinary families to enter the Parliament or state assemblies as these parties want "to confine power within their own family."
"Why does it trouble DMK, Congress to see ordinary women rise? I only wanted sisters from ordinary families to come to Parliament and assemblies in good numbers. But unfortunately, this noble effort got derailed. The DMK, the Congress and their allies made it a target of hatred and petty politics," he said and added, "These one-family parties want power to be confined in their own family," he alleged.
The PM said that on April 16, the NDA government had taken a historic step to move towards women's reservation in Parliament and legislative assemblies. "I personally appealed to all the opposition parties to support this. I told them very clearly that they may take the credit; I don't have any objection," he said.
Attacking the Opposition, he said, "If this bill had been passed, several Tamil women from ordinary families would become MPs and MLAs. Based on the 2011 census, Tamil Nadu was going to get so many more seats [in Parliament], but clearly, the DMK did not want this to happen. Anyhow, the DMK's intentions are now clearly exposed," he said.
Targeting the DMK cadre for wearing black shirts and trousers to oppose the Bill, Modi said, "By wearing black clothes, the DMK cannot cover up their wrong intentions."
He assured the people of Tamil Nadu that this is not the end of the fight but just the beginning. "The BJP and NDA will always fight for your rights", he said.
Alleging that the DMK has no achievement to focus on or no real issues to raise, Modi said, "That is why they resorted to spreading fake fears about a reduction in Tamil Nadu seats. The DMK had said earlier that the current proportional representation must be maintained. But they made a U-turn and opposed it."
He said the people of Tamil Nadu will have to decide on the April 23 polls, "The NDA is in, and the DMK is out."
"Coimbatore is a land of hardworking and affectionate people, and they have stood firmly with the politics of development with the BJP and NDA," he said.
Reiterating his pitch for a 'double-engine' government, Modi said, "When there is a double-engine government, work moves faster, and government schemes reach people quicker. Benefits multiply."
Modi referred to the PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, stating it has reached only 8,000 homes in Coimbatore.
"Each home got about Rs.75,000 subsidy for rooftop solar from the central government, and the total subsidy is about Rs.60 crore from the Centre. The benefit does not stop at the subsidy. According to one calculation, solar power cuts power bills, saving people money. Each home saves about Rs.2,000 monthly on power bill, and 8,000 homes together save about Rs.1.6 crore every month, which is Rs.19 crore every year. With an active state government, if the scheme reaches 1 lakh [100,000] homes, imagine the impact," he said.
Stressing that the NDA government would end the corruption in the DMK government, he said, "We will investigate all of DMK's scams and take action."
Appealing to the BJP karyakartas, he said in the coming days, they should reach every household in this region. "Meet every voter, especially first-time voters and women voters, explain the NDA's vision to them and expose DMK's failures. Tell people that this election is about Tamil Nadu's future and ensure that every booth witnesses record voting on April 23."
"Come, let us all make Viksit Tamil Nadu, Viksit Bharat," he said.
AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami, who heads the NDA in Tamil Nadu, BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran and his predecessor K Annamalai and others attended the rally.
Elections to 234 Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu will be held on April 23 and the polled votes will be counted on May 4....
