Palghar struggles, Vasai-Virar remains waterlogged
MUMBAI / PALGHAR, July 8 -- Heavy rain continued in Vasai-Virar just north of Mumbai, keeping many parts of the region waterlogged for the fourth consecutive day on Tuesday, even as the downpour eased in Palghar district.
Areas under the Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVCMC) recorded 192mm at 6:00pm on Tuesday, against 332mm on Monday. Continued heavy rain has kept many areas in the region flooded, with essential supplies dwindling.
Residents of Vasai-Virar and surrounding areas are struggling to recover from the downpour. Civic officials said that on Monday and Tuesday, 347 citizens were moved to temporary shelters provided by the VVCMC as contaminated rainwater seeped into their homes and shops.
In Vasant Nagri township in Vasai east, 50 cars were damaged due to waterlogging. "Around 2:00am, we waded through waist-deep water and remove the batteries of our cars as their alarms went off," said HS Dosani, a catering company owner, whose warehouse is located in Waliv in Vasai east. "My staff could not reach the warehouse as there was at least 3 feet water," said Dosani, who says he has lost material worth Rs.5 lakh due to the flooding.
Retailers are running out of essential supplies, leaving residents without sufficient groceries. Severe waterlogging has kept milk vans away; even vegetable trucks from Vasai's villages are unable to deliver fresh produce to urban areas.
Many residents said bottled drinking water was unavailable even as a power shutdown meant water could not be pumped to water tanks in housing societies. "We have been struggling without electricity and drinking water for three days," said Mahendra Mehta, a resident of Global City in Virar.
Citizens are angry, blaming the civic administration for the flooding, which has temporarily crippled life in many parts of Vasai-Virar. They want to know why the storm water drainage system appears to be completely overwhelmed.
"New buildings are being constructed but the drains and sewers have not kept pace with the pace of construction. In many places, encroachments sit on top of drains, rendering them useless," said Dosani.
Meanwhile, Palghar district received 182.8mm of rainfall, Dahanu taluka 170.8mm and Vasai taluka 170.6mm, as recorded at 7:00am on Tuesday. Areas under the Palghar Municipal Council, which registered a record 425mm until Tuesday morning, recorded 136 mm from 7:00am to 5:30pm. Waterlogging in rain-hit talukas too eased after floodwaters had climbed up to 3 to 4 feet in many homes.
Traffic on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway resumed without disruptions on Tuesday, but roads connecting Palghar with Boisar and Manor remained closed to traffic for the third day. Waterlogging at Nallasopara stalled railway services on the Western Railway for the better part of Tuesday. Schools and colleges, will continue to remain closed on Wednesday....
