NHRC to probe alleged use of minors as shields during CJP protest
MUMBAI, Oct. 4 -- Hours after the Mumbai police registered a case against CJP leaders over the protest at Shivaji Park on Friday, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) sought reports from various departments of the state government, central government and other authorities over allegations that minors were mobilised for the demonstration.
In a letter to the authorities, NHRC member Priyank Kanoongo stated that the commission had received a complaint alleging CJP leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Ajinkya Shinde and Saurav Das had discussed plans on WhatsApp groups to bring children to the protest to be used as shields during possible police action.
The commission has directed Mumbai police to examine videos, photographs, social media posts and electronic communications linked to the protest and register an FIR if the inquiry discloses a cognisable offence. Police have been asked to protect the identities of the children.
The matter was considered by a bench headed by NHRC Kanoongo under Section 12 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993. The complaint was submitted by Satish Vaid, head of intervention at the Sewa Nyaya Utthan Foundation.
