new facilities in Deonar and mahalaxmi to cremate animals
Mumbai, April 17 -- The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has set up incineration facilities for the cremation of small animals and birds at Deonar and Mahalaxmi, civic officials said. The facilities have been functional since April 1, 2026, in compliance with directives issued by the Bombay High Court.
Developed by the civic body's Veterinary Health Department, the initiative aims to ensure the scientific, hygienic and environmentally safe disposal of deceased animals. Additional municipal commissioner (city) Ashwini Joshi said the move will provide residents across Mumbai, including the eastern and western suburbs, with accessible services.
The Deonar incinerator, located at the municipal abattoir, can cremate animals and birds weighing up to 500 kg and operates on piped natural gas (PNG). The Mahalaxmi facility, housed within the BMC and Tata Trusts-run animal hospital, handles carcasses of up to 50 kg and is fully electric....
