MUMBAI, June 5 -- NCP candidate Vikram Kakade was elected unopposed to the legislative council on Thursday, but an entry in his election affidavit is raising eyebrows, much like his candidature itself did. Under the head 'Loans and Advances to Other Persons', the affidavit lists a sum of Rs.10 crore to Jay Pawar, son of party chief and deputy chief minister Sunetra Pawar. "It is not a loan," Kakade told the media on Thursday. It was an advance for a plot he intends to buy from Jay Pawar, said the 33-year-old Kakade, a real estate developer and former national-level shooter. "The election affidavit has a column where candidates are required to disclose any loans or advances given to individuals. Jay Pawar's name appears in that column because I am in the process of purchasing a bungalow owned by him, and the amount was paid as part of that transaction." While the affidavit lists the sums advanced, it does not list details regarding the nature, terms or purpose of the transactions. Kakade's affidavit goes on to record substantial sums lent to individuals and entities, including Purvez Keki Grant, Rustom Bharucha, Shreesha Enterprises, Kakade Promoters, Skylux Cityscapes, Jonas Holding, Kakade Developers and Raj Developers. Collectively, these transactions amount to Rs.41.8 crore. Kakade, son of Pune-based real estate developer and former BJP Rajya Sabha MP, Sanjay Kakade, has declared family assets worth Rs.162.21 crore in his election affidavit. He joined the NCP barely a week ago in the presence of Sunetra Pawar and her sons Jay and Parth. His nomination for the legislative council election sparked much resentment in the NCP, not only because he is a recent entrant but also because the NCP overlooked several long-time aspirants in his favour. Former MLA Sunil Tingre, who had filed his nomination papers, withdrew from the contest after being persuaded by the party leadership. Thursday was the last day for candidates to opt out of the fray. Elections to 16 legislative council seats from local self-government bodies are scheduled for June 18, with counting on June 22. Kakade's 41-page affidavit lists his movable assets at Rs.78.95 crore, including a fleet of 15 high-end cars such as BMW, Mercedes, among others. His declared immovable assets are worth Rs.83 crore, including two flats in his wife Devika's name. Kakade also owns a 155-sq m flat in Dubai. The disclosure further states that Kakade, has been named in a cheque bounce case. He has also reported income-tax liabilities of Rs.8.39 crore. In addition, two tax-related appeals involving disputed demands of Rs.7.39 crore and Rs.99.81 lakh are pending. Vikram's father was a rival of late NCP president Ajit Pawar, husband of Sunetra Pawar. In 2017, Sanjay Kakade played a key role in engineering the defection of several NCP corporators to the BJP. On the loan to Jay Pawar listed in Vikram Kakade's election affidavit, NCP spokesperson Umesh Patil said, "As far as I know, Vikram Kakade is a businessman and Jay Pawar too has his own businesses. Financial transactions and mutual assistance are common in the business world, whether among small entrepreneurs or large businesspersons. In fact, the transparency shown in disclosing these details in the election affidavit should be welcomed," he told the media. Asked if there was any link between the money transaction and Kakade's nomination, senior NCP leader Dilip Walse Patil, said "There is no reason to create doubts or apprehensions."...
