Murder case convict jumps parole, turns actor; nabbed after 12 years
Ahmedabad, May 22 -- A murder convict who jumped parole in 2014 and spent nearly 12 years absconding while working as a supporting actor in Bollywood films and television shows was arrested by the Ahmedabad Crime Branch, police said on Thursday.
The accused, Hemant Nagindas Modi, 53, a native of Naroda in Ahmedabad, was serving a life sentence in a 2005 murder case registered at Naroda police station. He was granted 30-day parole by the Gujarat High Court on July 25, 2014, but failed to surrender after the parole period ended and was later declared a parole jumper, officials said.
Crime Branch officials said they received a tip-off that Modi was arriving in Ahmedabad.
"Based on the input, teams traced his old contacts and placed them under technical surveillance before tracking and intercepting him near Gheekanta Metro Station around 1 pm on May 20," a senior official confirmed.
Police said Modi changed his identity after going absconding and built a career in films, television, web series and theatre while living in Mumbai. Despite maintaining a public-facing career in the entertainment industry, he managed to evade arrest for years, officials added.
Police records show that after jumping parole in 2014, Modi stayed in Patan district for about a year before returning to Ahmedabad under an assumed name, living in paying guest accommodation and taking up private jobs. He later moved to Mumbai, where he stayed at multiple locations between 2017 and 2025 and worked as a supporting actor in films and television. He returned to Ahmedabad in 2025 and was living near Gheekanta before his arrest.
According to police, Modi appeared in films such as 'Thugs of Hindostan' and 'Jayeshbhai Jordaar', featuring actors including Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan and Ranveer Singh. He was also associated with upcoming projects such as Lahore 1947, Metro In Dino and L2: Empuraan. Officials said he featured in television shows including 'Wagle Ki Duniya' and 'Mere Sai', and acted in theatre productions such as 'Yugpurush' and 'Gandhi Viruddh Godse'.
Police inspector P M Dhakad of the Ahmedabad City Crime Branch said, "Modi initially tried to conceal his identity after being detained, but later confessed during questioning. He admitted to having worked in films, web series, television and theatre while absconding."
Police said the case dates back to June 15, 2005, when a dispute over land and construction led to a clash between two groups in Naroda, during which one person was killed....
