MU agrees to re-evaluate LLB final yr results
MUMBAI, July 9 -- The University of Mumbai has agreed to re-evaluate the results of final-year law students of the five-year Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Legislative Law (BBA LLB-Hons) course at the university's Thane sub-campus. The move follows the students questioning "unusual patterns" in the Semester X examination results of all 48 students taking the course. The students point out that the marking pattern could influence their higher education and career opportunities.
Elaborating on these unusual patterns in a letter to the campus director, the students said, for instance, the marks in many subjects were between 60 and 77, with only a small difference between students.
They also alleged that many had received very similar marks and grades despite having different academic records over the last nine semesters. They have also sought clarity on whether any moderation or normalisation method was used while preparing the results. They claimed this was different from the pattern seen in previous semesters and questioned the fairness of the evaluation.
The students also pointed out that several had received the same Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA). According to them, several students were awarded identical SGPAs such as 6.40, 6.80, 7.20, 8.40 and 8.80. They said that while identical grades are possible, the number of students getting the same SGPA in a batch of 48 appeared unusually high.
In their letter, the students pointed out that many marks were close to grade boundaries, such as 68, 69, 71, 72, 75 and 77. This has prompted them to seek clarity on the assessment method used, urging the authorities to share details with them.
The students underlined that the final semester is important because it decides the overall CGPA and degree classification, which can influence admissions for higher studies, job opportunities and enrolment with the Bar Council.
A University of Mumbai official said the university is addressing the students grievances and has agreed to conduct a revaluation of their results....
