NAVI MUMBAI, Sept. 4 -- A 50-year-old Vashi resident, Gopiram Bhivaji Khadse, died at Hiranandani Fortis Hospital on Thursday, days after allegedly being administered expired intravenous saline at the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) Hospital in Vashi. Two nurses have been suspended following the incident, NMMC medical officer of health Dr Rajesh Mhatre confirmed. Khadse was admitted to the civic hospital on 31 August suffering from fever, dizziness, and weakness, subsequently testing positive for dengue and falciparum malaria (the most severe form of malaria). Health officials noted he also suffered from diabetes and hypertension. His condition deteriorated rapidly on 1 September, prompting his transfer under the NMMC quota to Fortis Hospital, where he was placed on life-support. His elder son, Vijay, said that severe side effects emerged immediately after a second bottle of expired saline was administered. Vijay said that his father suffered intense itching, hives, extreme fever, and severe body discoloration. Upon checking the IV bottle himself, Vijay discovered it had expired in July. Nursing staff allegedly acknowledged the error after being shown photographs of the bottle. The victim's family and local activists staged a protest outside the Vashi hospital demanding medical negligence charges, financial compensation, and a government job for a family member. Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena demanded a thorough investigation and scanning CCTV footage. NMMC health committee chairperson Dr Jayaji Nath stated that while it remains unconfirmed whether the expired saline directly caused the death, the alleged lapse is extremely serious. Medical superintendent Dr Ravindra Mhatre confirmed a post-mortem examination has been initiated, emphasising that further disciplinary and legal measures will depend directly on the final findings of the official inquiry committee....
