man held for supplying apk files to cyber fraudsters
Mumbai, Oct. 6 -- A 36-year-old B Tech dropout allegedly turned his technical skills into a cybercrime business, creating 2,805 malicious APK files and selling them to fraudsters who used them in 9,673 cases involving around Rs.150 crore in alleged fraud across the country, police said.
The Mumbai Crime Branch arrested Pankaj Gupta, a resident of Indore, Madhya Pradesh, for allegedly supplying the files to different cyber fraud gangs. The APKs were disguised as applications or links for services such as Aadhaar updates, electricity bill payments and Mahanagar Gas bill payments.
Gupta allegedly began making the files during the Covid-19 pandemic. Police said he was initially approached by fraudsters to help them cheat people, but instead of participating directly in the fraud, he allegedly realised he could make money by supplying them with the technical tools required. He then allegedly began developing APK files and selling them to different cybercrime gangs. htc...
