Major Gemini AI upgrade likely
New Delhi, May 13 -- Google plans a massive overhaul of its Android operating system, deeply embedding its Gemini artificial intelligence (AI) into third-party applications. The move, detailed ahead of the company's annual I/O developer conference, aims to effectively transform Android smartphones into dedicated AI devices.
The core of the update is a new "Gemini Intelligence" layer. This shifts Gemini from a conversational chatbot to an active, contextual assistant that automates everyday tasks.
"We believe that an intelligent system, and an agent that it empowers, should just get things done for you, especially the more mundane, boring daily tasks. Another thing is that it should meet you where you are and the apps that you're already in with proactive suggestions," said Dieter Bohn, director of product operations at Google.
New capabilities include contextual auto-fill for web forms, automated task management like booking event tickets, and a "Rambler" keyboard feature that translates spoken sentences with fillers into coherent messages or lists.
Google is issuing clear guidelines and tools to developers to ensure seamless integration and prevent feature fragmentation across different devices.
Ben Greenwood, director and product manager for Android core experiences, said that the features will roll out in waves over the subsequent months. They will debut on flagship devices, including Google's Pixel 10, Samsung's Galaxy S26 Ultra, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, and the Vivo X300 series., he said....
