Mahayuti sweeps council polls; BJP rebel wins, to join Sena as associate
MUMBAI, June 23 -- The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance has swept the legislative council polls in Maharashtra, winning 16 of the 17 seats up for grabs. But it's the lone seat the alliance lost - the Nashik seat - that has grabbed the spotlight. In Nashik, the Sena's Narendra Darade lost to a rebel BJP candidate Gokul Geete, who on Monday announced that he will join the Shinde-led Sena as an associate member in the legislative council.
By getting Geete to align with his party, Shinde has turned an embarrassing loss into a triumph. It's also Shinde's second coup in a week, after engineering the defection of six Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs to the Sena.
