Locals first to respond, rush stampede victims to city hospital
Kolkata, Oct. 19 -- Sonu Ojha, a resident of Chor Bagan, was chatting with two friends at a tea stall on Amar Basu Sarani, watching the crowd move towards the entrance of a puja pandal. It was drizzling, with occasional moderate spells.
"We could feel that something wasn't right. People were anxious and getting restless to take shelter under some shade as most weren't carrying umbrellas. Then we heard that a stampede had started near the exit on Bhuban Banerjee Lane. All three of us rushed to the spot and what we saw was hell," said Ojha, 37, a TV mechanic who closed his shop for the puja.
People were still rushing out of the pandal. Some lay unconscious on the road, while others were ill, gasping for breath or struggling to walk because of their injuries. "We carried a middle-aged woman on a plastic chair and took her to a cab. Her relative was with her. They rushed to the hospital and we went back to help others. Many other locals had also started helping the victims," he said.
In a video that surfaced on social media, people could be seen carrying an unconscious young woman and rushing down the lane.
"There were not enough police personnel and the organisers couldn't be seen anywhere. The locals started the rescue operation...," said Vivek Sonkar, another resident.
Most victims were rushed to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, around two kilometres from the stampede site....
