Jaandaar, star of the Pune Derby spectacle
India, Oct. 17 -- With the Pune Derby done and dusted, the racing season starts to wind down. On a particularly hot afternoon, the star of the show was Jaandaar, with not much on the sidelines to take the attention away from the equine.
Vijay Shirke's all-conquering colt extended his unbeaten run to five, and won all the plums of the season for horses of the classic age - FD Wadia, SA Poonawalla and the Derby. Interestingly, three years ago, another Sohna bred got abroad, Enabler, had also added the Pune Derby to his win in the SA Poonawalla. With Enabler also going on to win the Indian Derby, would history repeat itself?
The amiable late Sultan Singh, who ran Sohna, has an unbelievable strike rate in producing champions with its got abroads. The farm produced Jacqueline and Juliette, two of the greatest fillies to grace our turf, and after Enabler came Jaandaar. Pesi, who trains Jaandaar, also has the champion filly Margaretta, another Sohna bred got abroad who won the PBMM but has been rested in the monsoon. The Derby winning colt has a lightning turn of foot but could be tested over the Indian Derby mile-and-a-half by the filly.
Coming to last week's Pune racing, I must commend the conduct of Chairman of the Stewards, Ram Shroff, who had to use his casting vote to award the race to Yinisurk. It was not the decision per se, and having chaired the Stewards body in the past, it was a decision I would have made in a jiffy as severe interference was visible even to a layman. But in Ram overruling the contrarian view of three stipes and giving his colleagues the chance to opine first and vote last (something I have long advocated so as to not inhibit the others), it was impressive.
The Prix de l'Arc De Triomphe, run in Paris two Sundays ago and one of the most valuable races in the world, went to The Aga Khan family home bred, Daryz, in a canter to establish himself as one of the best thoroughbreds. Though he has since retired, his prospects as a stallion are intriguing. The son of another champion, Sea the Stars scooped the £2.5 million purse to take his career earnings past the £5 million mark.
Soon, the studs of Usha and the Poonawallas will have their private sales of yearlings. The loss of two racing clubs notwithstanding, new records with dizzying prices are on the horizon as the demand for top pedigrees appears insatiable....
