MUMBAI, Aug. 26 -- A 17-year-old boy was struck by an iron rod during demolition work being carried out for road widening in Vidyavihar (East) on Tuesday. Deven Jain, a first-year BCom student at Somaiya College, had just left college around 3.50 pm and was on his way to the railway station when the accident occurred. Deven was initially taken to Rajawadi Hospital for treatment and later shifted to Sion Hospital. His father Vinod Jain, 42, said, "He was bleeding profusely and required surgery." Deven lives with his family in Bhandup, where Vinod runs a shop. "His condition was stable on admission. He had an injury to his head. He has undergone surgery. The boy is doing fine. He has subcuticular stitches," said Dr Pramod Ingale, dean, Sion Hospital. The incident has raised questions over safety arrangements at the demolition site. Pravin Chheda, the local corporator, wrote to the municipal commissioner, alleging that safety precautions had not been taken at the site. Chheda has also alleged that the site lacked any precautionary signs. "There were no safety barricades nor warning signs installed," he said.
